The Sun culminates every day at a lower altitude, and the duration daylight hours continues to decline steadily. At the latitude of Moscow, the length of the day is: October 1 - 11 hours 34 minutes, October 15 - 10 hours 30 minutes, October 31 - 9 hours 18 minutes.

The Wolf number can be averaged over decades and months, which will make the observation results even more clear.

How to determine the Wolf number? For this you need multiply the number of sunspot groups you see by 10 and add the total number of visible sunspots. If one spot is visible, then the Wolf number (W) will be equal to 11, if two groups of spots consist of 5 spots, then the number W = 25. And if there is not a single spot, then the Wolf number is 0 (W = 0). And this result must also be noted in the observation log.

It is worth remembering that observing the Sun without using special protective equipment very dangerous for eyesight. When observing daylight, it is necessary to use either special solar light filters with all accompanying precautions, or use the method of observing the Sun on the screen. If you go out on a clear evening in mid-October around 10 pm local time, you will notice that the Big Dipper is visible low in the northwestern - northern part of the sky. Considerably to the right of the bucket, at approximately the same height above the horizon, a bright yellow star is visible in the northeastern part of the sky. This is the Chapel (α Auriga). The remaining stars of the constellation Auriga, which together with Capella form a large pentagon in the sky, are visible below and to the right of this bright star. Above Auriga, the T-shaped figure of the constellation Perseus is noticeable, and even higher - almost overhead - the stars of Cassiopeia, forming a W-shaped figure in the sky.

To the right and below the Capella, notice the bright orange star. This is Aldebaran (α Taurus). To the right and above Aldebaran, pay attention to the stars forming the figure of a house with a pointed roof lying on its side. Here, on ancient star maps, the head of a mythical bull was drawn. Now this is the central part of the constellation Taurus, as well as the open star cluster Hyades, against which orange Aldebaran is visible. Above and to the right of Aldebaran, find a small bucket of the open star cluster Pleiades, consisting of 6 stars to the naked eye. Using binoculars here you will find rich scatterings of several dozen stars.

Directly overhead - at the zenith - is Cepheus, whose stars form the shape of a house with a pointed roof.

High in the east - southeast - south are the constellations Andromeda and Pegasus, the “big square” of which is visible high in the southeastern part of the sky. Below the point of the south, the stars of Aquarius culminate, and very low above the horizon in the southern part of the sky in open areas you can see the bright bluish star Fomalhaut (α Southern Pisces). This is the southernmost bright star, which is visible from the territory of Russia. Its brightness is +1.2 mag.

How the luminary will destroy our planet

And don’t such active processes occurring on the star closest to us mean the beginning of any serious changes that could threaten earthly life in the foreseeable future? However, some of their colleagues are much more pessimistic and predict the likely onset of an imminent “solar demise.” They point to possible development processes on the Sun, which will lead to a supernova explosion. As a result, the outer solar shell will explode and for some time will emit energy in enormous quantities - the same amount per second as the Sun released in normal mode over the previous 10 thousand years.

Some of the supporters of this version believe that one of the signs of the beginning of a supernova transformation is, among other things, powerful flares on the Sun.

– Could this process take a long time? In other words, will there be enough solar life for our lifetime?

– Scientists do not have a common opinion here. For example, the Dutchman Piers Van der Meyer once stated that the Sun would go supernova in 2010. He called the discovered noticeable increase in the temperature of solar matter one of the arguments in favor of precisely this development of events. However, as we have seen, the Dutch researcher, fortunately, was mistaken. Although activation processes on our luminary have recently been noticeable. Among them, of course, are the current very powerful outbreaks. However, to be honest, we still cannot give an unambiguous answer to the question - will the Sun die in the foreseeable future? We still know too little about the star closest to us and what is happening to it.

– Can you imagine what the picture of the death of the Sun will look like if the gloomiest forecasts come true?

This is easier to do than to predict its “longevity.” Taking into account the distance to us from the star, earthlings will see its explosion about eight minutes later. The entire sky will be engulfed in a glow from the bright white flame emitted by the exploding star. The power of this glow will be such that night on the planet will disappear. Most likely, all living things - including people - will die at this first stage of the cataclysm.

Following this, streams of radioactive radiation will fall on the Earth - so powerful that the earth’s magnetic field cannot protect against them. Radiation will complete the destruction of flora and fauna. And all traces of their existence on the planet will then be incinerated: under the influence of anomalous solar radiation, the temperature on the Earth’s surface will quickly rise to 3-5 thousand degrees. All the water will evaporate and form a thick cloud cover at an altitude of tens of kilometers from the “ball”. But this is still only a “preliminary apocalypse.”

With such a metamorphosis, our planet can be “pushed” by solar radiation to a greater distance from the star, and it will begin to rotate around it in an orbit with a large radius, which will ultimately protect the Earth from excessive overheating. There is a chance that these new conditions for the existence of the Earth in circumsolar space will be suitable for preserving biological life on the surface of the planet. Although we must not forget that with such an “emergency evacuation” our “ball” may collide, for example, with Mars. Here the chances of survival and preservation of the planet are zero.
